Cardmaking and Art

Cardmaking has been a hobby of mine for quite some time now. To me, making someone a card tells them, "hey, you're worth it." It means I spent at least an hour (bare minimum) thinking up a design specific to the recipient, finding or creating the necessary components (from my ever-growing stash of papercrafting supplies), and assembling it. In college, I made all sorts of cards, memory books, illustrated story books, and artwork - mostly for my mother or whomever I was dating at the time. Nowadays, I have all sorts of ideas and great supplies with potential, but barely any time for cardmaking, which saddens me. If I need to make a card, I generally just forego a few hours of sleep to make it.

This past Mother's Day, I was determined to make a card for my mom. She is cool, artsy, generous, and patient, and I felt the least I could do to show my appreciation was to make her a card. I was also excited to try out my new clear stamps set from Stampers Anonymous, ColorBox ink pads, and Distress ink. I wish I had more time to embellish my card more and add layers, but I am satisfied with how it turned out.

The stamped frame design did not come out quite like I wanted, so I decided to color it in with various gel pens. I also colored in the crown, chandelier, and row of birds on the envelope to match. I do like how the bird turned out - stamped with black ink over the blue 'broken china' distress ink.

Someday I hope to have the time to make more elaborate cards. I have so many supplies just waiting to be used. I do have an idea brewing. Without delving into details, I am looking to rekindle a long lost friendship via written letter (yes, sometimes snail mail still seems the best way to go), and I want to create some sort of handmade item - a piece of artwork, most likely - to accompany my letter. I will post about that once I get around to it.

On another note, I had to share these pieces of artwork with you. If you have not seen this already, it is the world's largest surface area 3D painting, by British artist Joe Hill. Amazing, right? I think I would be scared to leave the 'cliff'!

I love this concept of 3D art. It had too much fun browsing the images in the article. Both source articles linked below have cool 'the making of' extras.

Artist Natalie Irish created this portrait of Marilyn Monroe using only her lips, lipstick, and canvas. Talk about original ideas.

It never ceases to amaze me what people can create, given the opportunity.

Thanks for joining me for Day 5 of launch month!
